welcome to the machine you crazy diamond

My theme is the bare nakedness of human nature and the slow but inevitable descent to corruption. I did not use just one medium to show this but experimented with a large variety of types like pencil, acrylic, and collages. The motifs used combine with recognizable imagery like buildings, hands, and trees to show symbolism throughout all the art pieces. The use of strong shapes also adds to bring attention to these symbols but also with all the works together it can be seen the strong juxtaposition between them to bring out the descent into corruption.
To start with would be my acrylic painting of the infant. This piece is pretty surreal in its nature with the almost random images smashed together. It's a good piece to start with as it really symbolizes the innocence and purity all human beings are born with; a content dreamlike state. This dream like painting is suppose to be symbolic of the youthful ignorance children hold to the corruption and utter dismay of the real world around them. They are caught in blissful ignorance free of worry or care. The child's hands are unsullied in this painting free from corruption and are of little fascination to the child. What she sees is the idealistic and fantastic possibilities all around her. The bird's symbolic signifigance is worry and care that have left this child so content.
Another would the watercolor painting. This one here was very experimental for me since I do not use watercolors very well. The importance here would be the symbolic nature of the birds who are strangling her as they fly away. They represent anxiety and worry. They are slowly killing her because of how prominent they are in the painting as they are in her life. She is unable to cut the strings and relax because she's attached to the materialistic world and technology which has led to her demise. The corruption is clear with the colors used for her clothing juxtaposed to the green background symbolic of nature and a carefree relaxing way of life.
Next would be my pencil sketch of a man who's slowly breaking down. First he obviously has his skin on his face symbolic of a mask that is slowly built up from human experience but then the lower the viewer looks such as on the side of his chest you only see the complex muscles that make up his neck and chest, then on the opposing side you see the bones that make up his body. This clear juxtaposition here shows how naked we really all are deep inside past the beauty and the break down of it all. Nothing is permanent and neither is our innocence as we just crumble more over time as seen here. The fascination and worried look on his face of his hand is symbolic of the corruption seen through his hands. This sin and wrong is stained on his hand which is why he is studying it so much. I did not want to cloud this image up specifically with discerning facial features or anything that would show too much individuality. I wanted to convey as barren a man as possible so the viewer would look at whats become of him and the true being inside.
My last painting would be the collage. I tried to use the face of an older aging man to show how he's torn apart and buried under the weight of reality and the corruption. The colors here show the desperation and bleakness of it all at the end of his life. The imagery of the towers and sky scrapers is not only a fallic symbol but also is there to show how human beings become so corrupted; it's because of our society and our growing dependency on technology that destroys us for who we are.
In conclusion, each piece of art is not only my theme but a part of my theme each aligning to show the big picture of it all and the slow but steady time line that all people face due to corruption. With our experiences in life it stains our hands red with corruption and slowly demolishes our childlike spirits and idealistic hopes for the future to a very dreary existence controlled by worry and anxiety. The idea of being born naturally good is evident with these works but even more so is the belief that this blissful state of being is destroyed by society and technology as we become materialistic and
